Ransomware has changed a lot since 2019. One of the biggest changes is that creators of ransomware have shifted to selling ransomware as a service for any attacker to purchase and use against people and companies. Group-IB, a cybersecurity company, found that in one year attackers have adopted a wider range of access vectors, drastically raised their ransom demands, and began to use threats of releasing stolen files as leverage. The most common ways that ransomware is being spread is through RDP, exploit kits, and spear phishing. It is still a great idea to have backups of all important files, but it’s more important than ever, especially for businesses, to make sure precautions have been taken to avoid being infected with ransomware.
